Health & Safety Transformation Across the Waste King Group

At Waste King, health and safety is far more than a compliance requirement. It is a fundamental part of how we protect our people, support our customers and deliver professional waste management services.

As the business has continued to grow, we recognised an opportunity to strengthen our Health & Safety Management System and build a culture where safety is embedded into everyday operations rather than existing solely within policies and procedures.

The Challenge

The waste and resource management industry presents a wide range of risks, including vehicle movements, plant operations, waste handling activities, contractor management and site-based operations.

Whilst Waste King had developed systems and procedures over time, we wanted to take the next step by creating a fully integrated approach to health and safety that would:

• Strengthen compliance

• Improve accountability

• Increase employee engagement

• Simplify systems and documentation

• Support future accreditation goals

• Foster a positive safety culture throughout the business

An initial review identified opportunities to further improve document control, training oversight, risk assessment management, compliance monitoring and ownership of key safety processes.

The Solution

To support this transformation, Waste King partnered with Ray Hipkin, a Chartered Occupational Health & Safety Practitioner and registered OSHCR consultant with extensive experience in the waste sector.

Working closely with Waste King’s leadership team, a structured improvement programme was developed with a clear focus on creating practical systems that support day-to-day operations.

Key initiatives included:

• Development of a new Group Health & Safety Policy

• Creation of operational Safe Systems of Work and RAMS

• Introduction of dynamic risk assessment processes

• Enhanced accident, incident and near-miss reporting procedures

• Improved compliance and training monitoring

• Strengthened induction and onboarding programmes

• Clearer accountability across the organisation

• Development of site-specific health and safety guidance and handbooks

Importantly, the emphasis was placed on creating systems that are practical, accessible and understood by the workforce rather than generating documentation for its own sake.

Investing in People

A key element of the programme has been developing internal capability alongside external expertise.

Waste King’s Operations Coordinator, Channon Fox, has taken an increasingly important role in supporting compliance systems and health and safety activities across the business. As part of this development, Channon enrolled on the IOSH Managing Safely qualification, reflecting Waste King’s commitment to investing in people and building long-term competence from within.

This approach helps ensure that health and safety knowledge remains embedded throughout the organisation and supports continual improvement well into the future.

Results Achieved

The programme has already delivered significant improvements across the Waste King Group.

Achievements include:

• Introduction of a comprehensive Group Health & Safety Policy

• Development of enhanced risk assessments and Safe Systems of Work

• Implementation of structured compliance and audit processes

• Improved staff training and competency management

• Completion of specialist training programmes

• Strengthened fire safety arrangements and workplace controls

• Achievement of SafeContractor accreditation

• Membership of the British Safety Council

These improvements have strengthened compliance, increased accountability and reinforced Waste King’s commitment to creating a safe and professional working environment.

Expert Support

A key factor in the success of the programme has been the guidance provided by Ray Hipkin.

With extensive experience supporting organisations across the waste, construction, agricultural and events sectors, Ray has helped Waste King implement practical, proportionate systems aligned with the realities of day-to-day operations. His approach focuses on creating positive safety cultures rather than simply meeting minimum legal requirements.

Looking Forward

Health and safety is not a destination. It is a journey of continual improvement.

With stronger systems, enhanced accountability, improved training and greater employee engagement, Waste King has established a framework that will support future growth whilst maintaining the highest standards of health, safety and operational excellence.

By combining experienced external guidance with investment in internal talent, Waste King continues to build a safer, stronger and more resilient organisation for employees, customers and stakeholders alike.
