As a Director of both Waste King Limited and Waste King Recycling Limited, and as a Chartered Resource and Waste Manager, I have spent many years helping organisations improve environmental performance through practical and commercially viable waste management solutions.

The transition to lower-carbon transport represents one of the most significant challenges facing our industry. While battery electric vehicles have an important role to play, I believe every fleet operator has a responsibility to evaluate whether a particular technology is appropriate for its operational requirements rather than assuming a single solution fits every application.

A vehicle’s environmental impact begins long before it is driven.

Although electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions, they generally require greater carbon emissions during manufacture, particularly because of battery production. These additional manufacturing emissions are expected to be recovered through lower operational emissions during the vehicle’s life, but the extent of that benefit depends entirely on how the vehicle is used.

For this reason, focusing solely on tailpipe emissions does not always provide a complete picture of environmental performance.

Battery electric vehicles may prove to be the most appropriate solution for some waste collection operations. Equally, there may be applications where payload limitations, range requirements or operational efficiency mean alternative technologies currently deliver lower overall carbon emissions.

By measuring payload, collection weights, mileage, utilisation and whole-life carbon emissions, Waste King intends to ensure that future fleet investment decisions are based on demonstrable environmental benefit and operational performance.
