Clearing up ‘cubic’ confusion

Waste King, an environmentally friendly company…

Those who aren’t habitués of the waste industry can be bemused, or even confused, to find that waste companies tend to charge to dispose of their customers’ rubbish by the ‘cubic yard’ or ‘cubic metre’.

Clearing up ‘cubic’ confusion

March 10, 2014

The main reason for this system of charges is to allow customers to compare prices across different firms. They can also compare these prices with the cost of skips – on a ‘like for like’ basis.

So charging by the cubic yard or metre is an attempt to provide some transparency to a potentially occluded and mysterious process.

By the way, should you want to convert cubic yards to cubic metres, you need to remember that a cubic metre is the equivalent of 1.3 cubic yards – or there are 0.76 cubic metres in one cubic yard (and, incidentally, one cubic yard is the same as 27 cubic feet).

On the other hand, you might find some – less open and transparent – companies provide quotes for removing waste by ‘the truck load’. For one thing, you can’t compare a price ‘per truck load’ with a price per cubic yard or metre. That’s like comparing elephants with giraffes, or footballers with darts players – since you don’t know the size of their truck, how ‘empty’ it is when it turns up at your property and how ‘full’ it needs to be before the operator says it’s full.

When you get prices for skips, you may be quoted for a ‘mini skip’ (these tend to hold two cubic yards of waste); ‘midi skip’ (four cubic yards), or a ‘builder’s skip’ or ‘large skip’. A builder’s or large skip usually holds six cubic yards of waste – but, sometimes, it can hold eight cubic yards. You need to confirm with the supplier which size of builder’s skip is meant before agreeing to hire it.

Importantly, though, once you know the cubic yardage that each skip holds, you can compare prices for these skips from various operators.

In addition – should you have a large amount of waste to dispose of – you may find some operators want to charge you a weight supplement, based on how heavy the load will be.

We’re keen that there’s no misunderstanding among our customers.

That’s not only why we’ve written this article but also why, at Waste King, we publish all of our prices for rubbish removal, both via skip and truck – in the interests of transparency and fairness to everyone. Our prices are always by the cubic yard/ metre and never by the truckload.
